When we think back sometimes we might wonder: “If only I had done this,” or “If only I hadn’t done that.” I guess that what regret is all about—wishing we had done things differently to change an outcome. But it’s not always a simple cause and effect.
Maybe we think: “If only this would have happened,” or “If only that had not happened.” Things would be so different, right?
Especially when situations or relationships are not as we’d like them to be, we think back and wonder if anything would have changed this outcome. Was there something we could have done—anything that could have happened—that would have made all the difference and we would have had a better outcome?
But, it’s not just about our decisions and those of others. We all come to learn eventually that no matter how well or how hard we try to create our lives the way we want, or think we want, there will always be external forces (things that are out of our control) that can change everything—sometimes in a split-second.
I just watched and enjoyed the movie “Sliding Doors” for the second time. It’s from 1998, staring Gwyneth Paltrow, and uses parallel time-lines to explore two different paths one’s life might take. It explores the concept of fate and how even simple moments can change our lives dramatically; it reminds of us how timing can be everything.
