As Mom sat next to Dad in the hospital, she got up, went to the nurses’ station and grabbed her chest in pain. She was having a heart attack; they rushed her to surgery and saved her life. She was determined to hang on to be there at the end for Dad.
So I had both parents in the hospital at the same time, on two different floors — Dad had Stage 4 lymphoma. Exhaustion could not stop me from spending as much time with each of them, going back and forth, wondering what the next moment would bring.
One day in the hospital, we rolled Dad in a wheelchair up to see Mom, and the next day we rolled Mom down to see Dad. Having been married for almost 63 years, they were so happy to see each other, even if it was only for a few minutes at a time.
