Weekly BLOG: Connecting with the past – in a good way

Discovering ancestors can be like putting together pieces of a large puzzle. When we assemble some of the parts, we are able to see at least a small section of the whole picture, and we may like what we discover and be excited by it, or not. 

Of course, we can never know the complete truth behind the scenes—besides the names, places, and dates. We can only imagine what kind of people they were, how they lived their lives, and what effect they had on their families and communities.

What I find most intriguing is that every ancestor, throughout history, with every decision they made, helped to create the path that allowed each of us to exist at this point in time – today.

In searching for my puzzle pieces I have discovered some facts I know for sure—perfect fits.  Other bits of information are possibilities that may or may not be documented or verified, some of which seem plausible, some questionable, and others that are difficult to believe.

Posting messages on different genealogy boards has been one of the ways I have tried to reach out to anyone who might be able to provide more information about some of my more elusive ancestors; some messages have been out there for years.

This week I was very excited to receive a message to one of those old postings – it was a woman who lives in north England; we share great-great grandparents in Scotland! Our great grandparents were sisters; her relative  stayed in the United Kingdom and mine ventured out and came to the U.S.

We are currently exchanging photos and details, piecing together more of the picture of those who came before us. I have more names, places, and dates, and one day I will have much more of a connection to the past when I travel to the U.K., hopefully meeting some of my new relatives.

One place I definitely want to see is the church yard in Luss, Scotland, where I know for sure my great-great grandmother is buried. Check out a picture of the church on my website blog at CWLauro.com
